Description
Sometimes known as the Mud Hen the American Coot, Fulica Americana, is a member of the rail family. Though often mistaken as ducks, they are distant relatives at best. Waterfowl hunters typically avoid shooting coots. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists them as a species of least concern. This photo was made near Union Point Park in New Bern, North Carolina. Ducks, pigeons and coots frequently congregate in the area looking for handouts from park visitors. The park is located near the conjunction of the Trent and Neuse Rivers.
