Description
This a view from Atlantic Beach, North Carolina west of the Oceanana Pier looking out over the ocean. The choice of black and white helps to place emphasis on the various textures and patterns found along the beach in the foreground and the clouds overhead. The use of a long exposure speed smooths the gentle, breaking waves near the beach.
Perhaps it's an odd choice to create a photograph looking out to the horizon without the crutch of a pier, dock and long stretch of beach. But there is something special about looking out on the ocean. To view it free of land based distractions. Perhaps it's a call home. An urge to return to the environment from which all life on this planet sprang.
One of several communities found on Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach is located near the eastern end of the island. On the western tip is the beach town of Emerald Isle. These island villages, combined with the rest of Carteret county make up what is known as the Crystal Coast or Southern Outer Banks. The area's proximity to the Gulf Stream provides mild weather, clear water, and excellent fishing and SCUBA diving opportunities.
