Description
A Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis, is perched on a branch in a dead tree at Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.. These bright red birds are non-migratory, spending the entire year in the same area. Easily recognized by serious bird watchers and lay people alike, it is the state bird for seven different states. Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia all claim the Cardinal as their state bird. These medium size songbirds are considered to be symbols of health, joy, hope and celebration. It is also said that the appearance of these birds indicates the presence of angels, that a passed love one is visiting and looking over you.. Regardless of such beliefs these brightly colored birds are a joy to see.
