Description
A Chipping Sparrow, Spizella passerina, is perched along the Red trail in the Boathouse Creek Park at Cedar Point, North Carolina. The rusty, red area on top of its head and the dark eye line indicate that this is a breeding male. These small birds are found throughout North America. Northern inhabitants are partially migratory moving south for the winter months. Two subspecies are recognized, the Western and the Eastern varieties.
