Description
A long wooden footbridge transports hikers over the salt marsh on the Tideland Trail. Located in the Cedar Point Recreation Area, Croatan National Forest, this well maintained path if popular with local bird watchers and dog walkers. Passing through wetlands along the White Oak river, and though Maritime forest, it provides excellent opportunity for a nice outdoor adventure. Many species of small song birds can be observed here as well as larger wading birds, herons and egrets. Osprey, frequently referred to as "Sea Hawks" or "Fish Eagles," are often observed. EVen the mighty Bald Ealge makes and appearence from time to time.
Located near the western edge of Carteret county, aka the Crystal Coast, the recreational area offeres more than just hiking. There is a modern campground on the property, maintained by the National Forest Service. A small boat ramp offers access to the White Oak River for boaters, kayakers and paddlers. A picturesque picnic area offers an opportunity for family gatherings. The entrance is located along VFW Road just off of highway 58, near where it crosses highway 24 at Cape Carteret.
