Description
A somewhat young Live Oak tree spreads it's twisted branches in a small clearing in a maritime forest on Bogue Banks in the community of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. The barrier islands of the Outer Banks were once covered with thick maritime forests similar to this. Today only small patches of these ancient woodlands remain. This black and white photograph was made on a late February morning near the Hoop Hole Creek nature reserve.
This was not an easy tree to find and required some exploration off of the main, marked trail in this nature reserve. There are many of these majestic oak trees visible along the marked path. Many more hide in the dense forest of the preserve.
