Description
In this dramatic black and white photograph the top of a stack of Civil War era cannon balls is seen in the front right-hand corner and an arched window into one of Fort's rooms in the rear left hand area.
Construction began on this installation in1826. It was completed December 1834. Further modifications were made between 1841 abd 1846, At the beginning of the War between the States the North Carolina militia seized the fort. Union forces attacked the fortress on April 25, 1962. The Confederate forces inside the fort surrendered the following day. U.S. troops held the location until the end of the war and continued to do so until 1877. Between December 1941 and November 1946, during World War II, the fort was manned by U.S. Army Coastal artillery troops.
The second most visited state park in NC, the state purchased to property in in 1924 for the staggering sum of one dollar! The park opened May 1, 1936 following reconstruction but the Civilian Conservation Corps during the the preceding two years. Fort Macon was North Carolina's first functioning state park.
The park is the second most frequently visited park in the NC State Park system. Open year round the park does not charge an entry nor parking fee. The park features a protected swimming area, bath house, refreshment stand and information center, as well as both sound side and surf fishing. Additionally, the Elliot Coues Nature Trail provides hikers and bicyclists a 3.2 mile loop around the park.
