Description
This image features a Greater Yellow Legs along the beach at the Rachel Carson Esturaine Reserve near Beaufort, North Carolina. These graceful wild birds pass through the Crystal Coast in the Fall and Spring during migration. The species gets its name from its long, bright yellow legs. The also sport a long, upward curving black bill, dark eyes and an intricate feather pattern. In this photograph the bird is wading in shallow water. A pleasantly smooth blue background adds to the quiet beauty of this color photo.
2010 Wildlife in North Carolina Photo Contest 2nd place winner in the "Birds" catagory. The image hung in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, Raliegh, NC, January through March 2011.
