Description
While exploring the Tideland trail in the Croatan National Forest I spotted this dead, fallen tree. I noticed that is was conveniently pointed towards the White Oak river. As the sun was begging to set I found that the pastel colors in the sky nicely complemented the color of the woodgrain and the brown marsh grass.
The Croatan National Forest encompasses land in three eastern North Carolina. Those counties are Carteret, Craven and Jones. Environments within the property include Pocosin swamp, Pine Savannah, Wetlands, Maritime forest, hardwood forest and pine forest. There are a number of lakes, streams and rivers within its boundaries. A variety of unusual flora grow in the area including Venus Flytrap, Pitcher Plants and wild orchids. Fauna of interest includes Black Bea, Whitetail Deer, American Alligator and Timber Rattlesnake. Numerous birds live and breed in the forest including the Red Cockaded and Piliated wood peckers.
