Description
This lovely wildflower is known as Butterfly Milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa. Other common names include Orange Milkweed, Pleurisy Root,Chigger Flower and Butterfly Weed. Its root was chewed by Native Americans as a cure for pleurisy, bronchitis and other ailments. A native species this flower is often grown as an ornimental plant for its lovely orange color and to attract butterflies.
This image was made in the Croatan Natioal Forest near the Cherry Branch Ferry in Eastern North Carolina. It was found on an old forest access road that has morphed into a long, meadow like area adjacent to the Neusiok hiking trail
