Description
A cluster of Black-Eyed Susan wildflowers, Rudbeckia hirta rises up from the floor of the Croatan National Forest. A thick growth of ferns provides a lucious green background to the lovely yellow blooms. It is a beautiful late spring day in eastern North Carolina.
The national forest occupies areas in Carteret, Craven and Jones counties on the NC coastal plain. This national reserve includes pine savanna, decidious woodland, maritime forest and wetland ecosystems. It is one of several natural wonders located along the Crystal Coast and neighboring areas.
These golden native flowers are known by several names including Black-Eyed Susans, Yellow Daisies, Brown Eyed Susans and Brown Betties.
