Here's a close-up look at a Wild Azelea bloom (Rhododendron calendulaceum) growing the Croatan National Forest or eastern NC, A native North American plant and found in acid bogs its natural distribution includes the Coastal Plain and Piedmont from North Carolina to Florida and Texas. A flowering bush, it can grow to a height of eight feet. Common names include: Wild Azalea, Mountain Azalea, Honeysuckle Azalea, Piedmont Azalea, Sweet Azalea, Hoary Azalea, Southern Pinxterflower. This photograph was made in the Spring, early April, along the Neusiok Trail.

When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river.
