Here's a close-up look at a Wild Azelea bloom (Rhododendron calendulaceum) growing the Croatan National Forest or eastern NC, A native North American plant and found in acid bogs its natural distribution includes the Coastal Plain and Piedmont from North Carolina to Florida and Texas. A flowering bush, it can grow to a height of eight feet. Common names include: Wild Azalea, Mountain Azalea, Honeysuckle Azalea, Piedmont Azalea, Sweet Azalea, Hoary Azalea, Southern Pinxterflower. This photograph was made in the Spring, early April, along the Neusiok Trail.
