A Laughing Gull glides through the sky above the Neuse River in eastern North Carolina. The golden light of the setting sun bathes the black and white bird as it follows the Ferry traveling between Minnesott Beach and Cherry Branch.
Considered pests by coastal locals, tourists always seem delighted to see these birds. Their distinguished call souns as if they are laughing, a trait resulting in their name. This common seagull is found along the Atantic coast of North and South America as well as in the Caribbean. A bold scavenger, these omnivores will often take handouts from the hands of smiling tourists.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
