Description

Waves wash up on the sandy beach leaving behind small shells rocks and other treasures from the sea. Nearby a wooden structure reaches out towards the horizon. It is the Oceanana Fishing Pier at Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Overhead a heavy blanket of clouds obscures the expected palette of bright colors created by the setting sun. It is winter along the Crystal Coast.

The pier is empty now, closed for the season. in a few weeks it will be alive with anglers hoping to harvest some of the bounty that the sea provides. Soon the shoreline will be bustling with activity. Sunbathers, beachcombers, surf fishermen, joggers and walkers with flock to the water's edge. But this evening only a few locals and off-season visitors share the beach..

Atlantic Beach is one of several communities found on the barrier island known as Bogue Banks. These towns and those across the sound, make up a region known as the Crystal Coast or the Southern Outer Banks. Not long ago there were several of these piers located in this beach village. Today there is only one. It is only natural to wonder if this one will remain much longer. Or will it be replaced by McMansions, condos or hotels? Only time will tell.
