A yellow warped warbler, Setophaga coronata, is perched on a small limb along the hiking trail at Patsy Pond in the Croatan National Forest. The only warbler able to digest the waxy fruits of bayberry and wax myrtle, they are able to winter farther north than other warblers.
Patsy pond features a variety of loop trails of various lengths. Located along Highway 24 between Morehead City and Cape Carteret, North Carolina, there is a gravel parking area at the trail head. This nature trail is maintained by the NC Coastal Federation in cooperation with the National Forest Service. the NCCF office is located across the highway from the trails. The area is an open long leaf pine woods. There are several shallow ponds as well as small sink holes in the area.
