A narrow dirt road curves into the forest, disappearing into the thick pine forest ahead. Taken in the early Spring of 2021, narrow trails such as this are used to access the woodlands in case of fire and to provide passage into the wild areas for nature lovers and hunters.
Located on the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina, the Croatan National Forest occupies nearly 160,000 acres and occupies three coastal counties. Managed by the U.S. National Forest Service (USNFS), it is bordered by the Neuse River, Bogue Sound and White Oak River. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including Black Bears and Whitetail Deer, several species of reptiles such as the American Alligator and Timber Rattlesnake. Many birds make this woodlands their home including the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker, plus a variety of owls and raptors. A number of exotic plants can also be found, including carnivorous plants and wild orchids. The Croatan offers a plethora of opportunities and adventures...

As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
