Artist's Description
A White Ibis is perched in a low lying tree in a small swamp at Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. This photo was made on an early April morning along the Elliot Couse hiking trail. A medium sized, wading bird, American White Ibis feed largely on aquatic crustaceans and insects. They can bee seen feeding in agricultural fields and even back yards throughout coastal Carolina. Their long, downward curve bills are used to probe mud and soil for food. Rather than seeing their prey they feel it with their bills. With the exception of seagulls, these birds are probably the most commonly seen wild bird along the Crystal Coast.
