Artist's Description
A wooden split rail fence runs up the ridge at Pine Cliffs recreation area in the Croatan National Forest. In fact, the fence once ran along the top of the cliff in the picnic area at this popular eastern North Carolina spot. However, the dirt cliffs were push back during Hurricane Florence in September of 2018. This is all that remains of the rustic guardrail.
This portion of the river took substantial damage during the storm and the picnic grounds have remained closed to the public for several years. As the location of the trailhead for the Neusiok hiking trail, the route has been re-routed until the original trail can be cleared of fallen trees and other hazards.
This popular spot is found along the Neuse river near the Cherry Branch ferry terminal. The community of Minnosott Beach is on the other side of the river. This location is also close to the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and has been a popular place for military personnel and their families to recreat...
About Bob Decker
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
