Osprey in Flight Above Goose Creek State Park - Eastern North Carolina
Photograph - Photograph
A beautiful Osprey soars above Goose Creek State Park in eastern North Carolina. This large raptor (Pandion haliaetus) was once endangered but has made a dramatic comeback in the last couple of decades. Also known as the Fish Eagle or Sea Hawk, this predator is somewhat unique among hawks as it is an excellent fisherman and preys primarily on live fish. This large bird of prey, with its white head and body, is often mistaken for the larger American Bald Eagle.
This color photograph was made at the end of March 2021. Goose Creek State Park is located near the historic town of Bath and Washington NC. The park features 8 miles of hiking trails and every type of ecosystem present in eastern NC is represented in the park. This includes bog, salt marsh and sand hill ecosystems.
