I would love to paddle here. I have kayaked Ocracoke on a few occasions but there is so much of the NC coast I want to explore. Congrats - Your fine work has been featured on the homepage of the “You Deserve a Good Paddling” group!

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.

Artist's Description

This is a view near the headwaters of Cahooque Creek in the Croatan National Forest. The water becomes too shallow and waterways too narrow for even a kayak just a be farther into the swamp.

Cahooque Creek Landing has a boat ramp where boats and kayaks are launched into Hancock Creek. Traveling to the right one can float to the Neuse River or take a right hand turn into Cahooque Creek a hundred yards or so from the boat ramp. A leisurely paddle, Cahooque slowly narrows, eventually becoming a swamp.

It is not unusual to see an American Alligator or two when paddling this body of water. Osprey frequently soar above, looking for a fish to snatch from the tanin water. Herons and egrets are often spotted as the search the shallows near the banks for a quick meal. Other creatures frequently seen when exploring this area includes turtles and Wood Ducks.

Cahooque Creek offers an interesting and realitively easy paddle. Along the way the paddler gets to watch the ecosyste...

About Bob Decker

Bob Decker

When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
