The autumn color change comes late to the coastal plain of North Carolina. The Island Creek Walk trail is located in the Croatan National Forest between New Bern and Polloksville. It is a somewhat unique terrain for eastern NC. Rather than the usual pine forest it is a deciduous woodland area with limestone outcroppings. When visiting this area I have seen both Whitetail Deer and Black Bear, plus the ever present Gray Squirrel. Flora includes Bald Cypress, Sweet Gum, Tulip and other trees.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
