Description
Fort Macon was bulit in 1836 and was active during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War II. The five sided structure is located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, a barrier island. The fort is a main attraction in the state park bearing its name. While the park is relatively small, about 432 acres, it is also one of the most frequently visited state parks in North Carolina. Located next to Atlantic Beach and only a short drive from other Crystal Coast communities, it is little wonder why it hosts so many visitors each year.
