A leaf floats on Island Creek in the Croatan National Forest. The black and white treatment makes the refections on a water appear smoke-like. If I'm not mistaken it is a leaf from a Dogwood tree.
The Island Creek Forest Walk is a popular hiking trail that runs nest to this little blackwater stream. Limestone outcroppings can be found along the creek. Unlike much of the national forest, this section is largely deciduous trees rarther than pines. It is a picturesque walk and makes an especially nice Spring or Fall adventure.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
