Here are some ferns growing in the maritime forest along the Willow Pond Trail. This short hike is found on the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum property on Harkers Island, North Carolina. The dirt path circles a small pond that is frequented by a variety of Egrets, Herons and Ibis. There is also a wildlife observation blind that looks over the small body of water. This is one of several hiking trails located along the Crystal Coast.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
