Artist's Description
A fire access road dead ends in the Croatan National Forest. Fall foliage mixed with Long Leaf Pine lines the edges of this trail. The dirt and gravel roadway is overgrown with grass and weeds.
HIkers and hunters both walk these access roads to explore the woodlands. When walking these pathways into the wilderness I have seen deer, bear, birds and exotic plants such as orchids and carnivorus flora. In the Fall one is well advised to wear a hunter orange hat so not to be mistaken for game.
This image was made near the Cherry Branch NC Ferry terminal, not far from one of the access points to the Neusiok Trail in Carteret county, North Carolina. The Croatan National Forest occupies land in Carteret, Craven and Jones counties. While most people visit this area to see the beach or sail the Neuse River, the forest is well worth exploring.
About Bob Decker
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
