This picturesque dead tree is found at the Grassy Ridge Mine Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. The image was made October 24, 2021. Autumn colors can bee seen in the foliage on the mountains.
When I arrived a the location there was only one other photographer on site. We chatted a bit as I set-up my tripod and camera. While waiting on the sunset I aimed my camera at the dead tree a few yards below and in front of us. He glanced over and commented he'd tried to get a photo of that tree several times but had never gotten a composition that satisfied him. I have no idea what he'd think of my attempt.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
