In this dramatic black and white photograph the top of a stack of Civil War era cannon balls is seen in the front right-hand corner and an arched window into one of Fort's rooms in the rear left hand area.
Construction began on this installation in1826. It was completed December 1834. Further modifications were made between 1841 abd 1846, At the beginning of the War between the States the North Carolina militia seized the fort. Union forces attacked the fortress on April 25, 1962. The Confederate forces inside the fort surrendered the following day. U.S. troops held the location until the end of the war and continued to do so until 1877. Between December 1941 and November 1946, during World War II, the fort was manned by U.S. Army Coastal artillery troops.

I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
