This woodland area in the Croatan National Forest is a vibrant green on this spring morning. The trees are reflected on the slow moving waters of Island Creek. It is a beautiful time for adventurers and nature lovers to explore the forest.
Located in Jones county in eastern North Carolina, the Island Creek Forest Walk parallels the stream by the same name. The trailhead is found between New Bern and Pollocksville. There is a small, gravel parking lot where the trail begins. The official NFS loop trail is only 1/2 mile in length but there are miles of unmarked paths that interconnect with the main trail.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
