A young Whitetail deer is bedded down along the edge of a yard in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. A substantial herd of deer lives in the wooded areas in this Crystal Coast beach community. While not totally habituated to humans, they do reamain fairly calm when people are in the area. For example, I was once hiking in one of the local parks when I heard a branch break behind. I turned around fully expecting to see another hiker. Instead there stood a large buck with impressive antlers perhaps 20 feet behind me. He calmly circled off the trail, meandered around me and headed on his way. Never showing alarm nor being too far out of my reach.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
