Description
A live oak is surrounded by lovely morning light in a maritime forest found along the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. This photograph was made on a late February morning in the Hoop Pole Creek Nature Reserve, Atlantic Beach, NC. A starburst sun shines behind this twisted, backlit tree. Green moss growing on its limbs provides a nice color contrast to this image.
When European explorers first reach the Americas much of what is now the southeastern coast of the United States was covered by maritime forest. There barrier islands that make up the Outer Banks were heavily forested. Today there are only a few small examples of this environment. This little nature reserve is one of those special places.
