Little Blue Herons start there lives as pure white birds. So white, in fact, that they're often mistake for Snowy Egrets or young Great Egrets. As they mature they gain their distinctive blue plumage. This young bird is starting to get its adult color.
This photo was made from the observation blind along the Willow Pond Trail at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. Located near the eastern end of Harkers Island, the museum shares the history of Downeast Carteret County. The facility is one of the crown jewel attractions of the Crystal Coast.
