A narrow, grassy path cuts between the towering pine trees in the Croatan National Forest. It appears to be a long forgotten path that has not seen travels recently. Winter in these southern pine forest provides a palette of greens and browns. In the Autumn the sprinkling of deciduous oak, birch and tulip trees can add splashes of bright colors.
This scene was found while hiking an old fire access road in the National Forest. The road is adjacent to, but not parallel with the 21 mile long Neusiok hiking trail in eastern North Carolina. While there are a limited number of hiking trails in this forest, access roads provide comfortable path for photographers, nature lover, bird watchers and hunters.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
