A traditional wooden trawler in its berth in the Harkers Island, North Carolina harbor. The bow of the boat is reflected perfectly by the smooth surface of the water. This section of the Crystal Coast is known as Downeast, NC. It has a long commercial fishing tradition. The island was first occupied by European Settlers in the early 1700s and was secluded from the mainland until a bridge to the island was built in 1940. Due to its isolation islanders spoke a dialect that was a direct variation of old English. Known as the Harkers Island Brogue, native residents can be difficult to understand by those from other areas.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
