Artist's Description

A traditional wooden trawler in its berth in the Harkers Island, North Carolina harbor. The bow of the boat is reflected perfectly by the smooth surface of the water. This section of the Crystal Coast is known as Downeast, NC. It has a long commercial fishing tradition. The island was first occupied by European Settlers in the early 1700s and was secluded from the mainland until a bridge to the island was built in 1940. Due to its isolation islanders spoke a dialect that was a direct variation of old English. Known as the Harkers Island Brogue, native residents can be difficult to understand by those from other areas.
