Description
Horses have been living wild and free along the North Carolina coast for neary five centuries. While the debate rages on whether they were surviors of shipwrecks or purposely left behind b early explorers, these animals made a home in this harsh environment.
This photo was taken at the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve, Beaufort, North Carolina. This herd is likely a mix of domestic and banker horses. An early town person used to keep horses on the island across from the town. As the story goes his herd included domestic and banker stock. Over time they were abandoned to fare for themselves. The nearby island of Sheckleford bands holds a herd of true Banker horses descended from Spanish Colonial stock.
