A wild mare nuzzles her foal on a North Carolina barrier island along the Outer Banks. This black and white photo was taken in the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Accessing the park requires a boat. Park service ferries depart from Harkers Island and Beaufort, NC. When visiting these magnificent animals park tourists are to stay a minimum of 50 feet away. This insures the health and safety of both these wild mustangs and the people viewing them.
These wild equines have made a home along the coast of North America for nearly 500 years. Descendants of the Spanish Colonial horses used by early European explorers, it was easier to leave the stock behind than transport them back across the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly every barrier island along the North American coast supported a population of wild mustangs until recently. The animals have been revmoved from most of these locations and, today, only a few herds remain.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
