Description
A large bull elk feeds on grass in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Elk were once plentiful in this region of North Carolina and Tennessee. Hunting pressure in the 1800's erased them from the area landscape. Recent effort to reintroduce these powerful animals have been successful. Reintroduced in 2001 today there are about 200 elk living in the park. These majestic animals can weight up to 700 pounds and grow to 5 foot tall at the shoulder. While the Catalooche Valley area is known as the best place to view these antlered animals, elk may be encountered throughout the park.
