A large Live Oak tree's limbs twist and turn in this black and white photo. Taken along the Hoop Hole Creek Nature Trail at Atlantic Beach North Carolina, the fat trunk barely rises above the maritime forest floor before branching out in many directions. A twisted and tangled root system can be seen on the ground below this ancient tree. Large vies climb and warp up the trees huge branches. Contrast, texture and curves are the main attractions in this grayscale image.
This ancient oak is estimated to be 300 to 350 years old... that makes it a three century tree! Just imagine the history witnessed by this mighty tree. It was alive during the Revolutionary war and the American Civil War. This live oak tree existed and survived many of the events that shape our nation. While not as old as the famous "Angel Oak" the fact that it still stands on a small nature reserve sitting within a popular beach community is a bit miraculous. It is indeed an impressive work of nature to view.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
