Artist's Description
This sturdy Live Oak tree is estimated to be around 300 years old. Found along the hiking trail in the Hoop Pole Creek Nature Preserve, it is a popular sight for both residents and tourists. Know by some locals as the Portrait Tree, it is a popular prop for photos of chidren and adventureous adults sitting on the low slung branches.
Owned by the North Carolina Coastal Federation, this small patch of a natural maritime forest represents the woodlands that once occupied much of the barrier islands found of the Southeaster coast of United States. The trail leads through the woods to an estuarine area.
The nature reserve where this old oak grows is located in the beach town of Atlantic Beach. Sometimes referred to as the community's "Central Park," this natural area occupies 39 acres in the center of town. Beyond the mud, water and grasses of the marsh visitors can see the man made structures that surround this natural environment in the distance.

I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
