Description
Live can be a struggle along the edge of a continent. Saltwater strong winds, not to mention tropical storms and hurricanes, can make life tough. In this scene we see a cluster of Live Oak trees. If found further inland these trees would be much larger. But here at the beach the competition for nutrition and freshwater places constraints on their growth. Still, there is a beauty in the twists and turns of their stunted trunks and limbs.
Cedar Island is a remote community located at the eastern end of Carteret county, North Carolina. There is a long tradtion of commercial fishing here and many of the residents still work the local waters to earn a living. It is also the location of a NC Ferry Terminal where ferries carry people and cars across the sound to Oakracoke Island. Simply put, the ferry transports its passengers between the Southern Outer Banks and the Outer Banks.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
