Built for war today Fort Macon is one of North Carolina's most popular state parks. This black and white photo was made in one of the few rooms open to the public in the outer portion of the old Civil War Fort. The only light entering the area is through a single, arched door. The bright sunlight spilling through the doorway aond across the stops and floor gives the impression of a stairway leading into the another dimionsion. A stairway to heaven if you will.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
