A Spicebrush Swallowtail Butterfly feeds on a thistle plant in the Croatan National Forest of Eastern North Carolina. A common black swallowtail, this large butterfly is also know as the Green-Clouded butterfly. This insect's family, Papilionidae, are some of the largest butterflies in the world. Swallowtails are unique in the butterfly world as the flutter their wings while feeding. Unlike other specied that fly at great heights these pretty insects stay close to the ground.
This color image was made the first day of May, 2021 in the Croatan National Forest between the communities of Newport, Havelock and Cape Carteret. The pine savanna was alive with these active little creatures.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
