Description
The sun begins to set over Core Sound as seen from Shell Point on Harkers Island, North Carolina. Named for a thirty foot mound of shells, bones and stone tools left behind by Native Americans, it is located at the eastern end of the island. The Cape Lookout National Seashore Visitor Center is located on the north side of the road. This end of this Downeast community is also the location of the Core Sound Waterfowl Musem.
Native islanders have a distinct brogue that is reminiscent of the way colonial settlers spoke. Residents were isolated from the mainland until a bridge was built connecting the island. Part of the Crystal Coast, this and other "Downeast" Carteret County communities have a long tradition of fishing and waterfowling.
