Artist's Description

A small bit of a sand fence remains exposed at the Point, Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Shifting sands have overtaken the old, wooden structure, helping the due it once held back to grow. Structures such as this can be used to hond back encroaching sand to keep pathways open or, as in this case, be an integral part of beach recovery. Discarded Christamas trees are also used in the rebuilding of sand dunes along the coast. Dunes are the first line of defense against enchroaching waves during coastal storms.

"The Point" is a large, natural area located at the tip of Bogue Banks, a barrier island along the NC coast. Local regulations are in place to insure the area is free of developent to help protect this Crystal Coast community and to maintain the Bogue Inlet. During mush of the year the dunes are off-limits to foot traffic and are used as nesting areas for endangered shorebirds. Areas such as this are essential coastal eco-systems.

About Bob Decker

Bob Decker

I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
