A look at a pine savanna in the Croatan National Forest near Newport and Cape Carteret, North Carolina. The floor of the savanna is covered with ferns. In times past, the coastal plain of North Carolina was dominated by savanna areas like this. Today, only a few remain. Love the pines! almost the only trees we have in Iceland, planted in all towns some 30 years ago, and are now "ripping up the streets". :)
