Description
During World War II a bunker sat atop of this high dune. Today there is a side trail leading off the Elliot Couse Nature Trail in Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Two benches sit at the top of the overlook. Remnants of the old concrete bunker can be seen a few feet below. An informational plaque describes the bunker and its cannon.
This view is looking out towards the Beaufrot Inlet. Shackleford Banks, a barrier island, can be seen in the distance. Core Banks and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse can be seen very far in the distance when viewing the image at 100% magnifcation or greater.
The Elliot Couse Nature trail is a 3 1/2 mile loop that leads through a vriety of coastal environments. Hikers are taken through the high dunes, through a section of maritime forest and past a salt marsh. Wildlife that may be encountered along the path include Whitetail Deer, Cotton Tail Rabbit, Gray Squirrel, Coyote, Red and Gray Fox, as well as a variety of birds and reptiles. It is a popular hike for locals and tourists alike.
