Description
Island Creek meanders through the Croatan National Forest. A blackwater stream, its water is stained a tea-brown. Bald Cypress trees rise up along its banks and, in some cases, even from inside the creek. A lovely hiking trail parallels the brook.
Located between New Bern and Pollocksville, there is a small parking area at the trailhead. Wildlife encounters, though rare, can include Black Bear, White Tail Deer, Wild Turkey and a large variety of song birds and woodpeckers. While most of North Carolina's coastal forests are made up of pines, this woodland area is dominated by deciduous trees. Also a rarity along the coast, there are numerous limestone outcroppings along the creek.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
