Located along the Elliot Coues hiking trail, there is a small, swampy area in the park that is frequently a good location for photographing small birds such as wrens and warblers. On this early April visit to Fort Macon the song birds were scarce. However, I was lucking enough to find a lovely Mallard Duck hen feeding in the shallow water of the bog. The surface of the water is covered with duckweed and reeds rise up from the muddy bottom making a nice, natural setting for a portrait of this pretty little duck.
North Carolina's first state park, Fort Macon is located on the northeastern tip of Bogue Banks, a long barrier island. This narrow strip of land is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Bogue Sound. The beach communities of Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle can be found on opposite ends of the island. The park offers shore fishing, swimming, hiking and the opportunity to explore the earth and brick fortress that saw action during the American Civil War.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
