Description
A wild Mallard duck hen, Anas platyrhynchos, swims along the Neuse River in New Bern North Carolina. Native to the Americas, Eurasia and North Africa. A dabbling , rahter than a diving duck, Mallards are the main ancestor of most domestic duck breeds.
This photo was made at Union Point Park is located a the convergence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. The park is a popular location for weddings and other local events. Visitors frequently enjoy feeding the ducks that gather along the shoreline. Recently a developer expressed and interest in purchasing a portion of the park to build a boutique hotel. Public outcry caused the company to abandon those plans.
