Description
Originally built to house the world's largest water pump, it was converted into a lodge in the 1930s. The striped tower sometimes referred to as the Mattamuskeet Lighthouse, was originally a smoke stack for the steam engines that powered the pump. After the conversion to a place of lodging the stack was converted into an observation tower complete with a spiral staircase leading to the top. Once owned by the US Government the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently owned by the state of North Carolina. Renovations are slowly being made to the facility with plans for it to eventually reopen.
